Stay, hand over or step back.
After a sale, some founders keep working on the product, some hand it over over a few months and some step back at once. Each path can work if it is agreed in advance.
Contents11.1Can a founder leave after a sale?1 / 5
§ 11.1
Can a founder leave after a sale?Yes, with a plan.
Yes. The usual paths are to stay and keep leading, to transition out over an agreed period, or to step back soon after the sale. Agree the path, its length and what you will hand over before you sign.
- Document what only you know before the sale.
- Agree your role, its end date and how you will be paid for it.
- Ask the buyer who takes over each of your tasks.
§ 11.2
Three paths. Each one needs something different.
- Path 1
Stay and keep leading
You keep running the product with new support. Agree decision rights, budgets and how success is measured.
- Path 2
Transition out over time
You hand over over an agreed period. Agree a list of tasks, a successor and a schedule.
- Path 3
Step back after the sale
You leave soon after closing. This needs strong documentation and a buyer who can run the product from day one.
§ 11.3
What to settle before you sign.Five points.
Agree in writing
- Your role, your hours and how long it lasts.
- Who takes over support, deployment and billing.
- Any limits on your future work, and their length.
- How your transition work is paid.
- What happens if the plan changes.
§ 11.4
How we approach it.Your goals first.
We ask what you want from a transition in the first email, because it shapes everything after.
We agree your role in the transition plan, before ownership changes. Some founders want to stay involved for a period. Others want a clean handover. Both can work.
§ 11.5
Founder questions.Short answers.
Do I need a successor before I sell?
Not always. The buyer may provide one. But a business that runs without you for a few weeks is easier to sell.
Can I stay on as an adviser?
Often, yes. Agree the scope, the time and the payment, so that both sides know what to expect.
What if I want to leave sooner than planned?
Say so early. A good transition plan says how changes to it are handled.
